EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey program has added a new member to its staff. Molly Maloney, a former goalkeeper for the University of Michigan from 2000-04, will join the Spartans as an assistant coach for the 2008 season. Maloney's main focus will be with the goalkeepers.

"I'm really excited to be back in the Big Ten," said Maloney. "I'm very blessed to be working with Coach Knull and Coach van de Kerkhof. I am impressed with their coaching style here and eager to work with people that are so knowledgeable of the game. The bar is set high here at Michigan State and I'm excited to be coaching in that kind of atmosphere."

Maloney comes to Michigan State from Central Michigan, where she earned a master's degree in physical education with an emphasis in excercise science. She earned her bachelor's degreee in physical education at the University of Michigan between 2000-2004.

During her time at CMU, Maloney was a graduate assistant in physical education, while assisting with the varsity field hockey program. She was also a graduate assistant at Kent State University in 2005, primarily working with goalkeepers and defensive corner units. In the 2005, she worked closely with current Michigan State assistant coach Helen Knull, who was an assistant for the Golden Flashes between 2003-04 and associate head coach in 2005.

Maloney garnered many accolades in her time with the Wolverines, including the Michigan Field Hockey Brian Fishman Award, which is given to an athlete who demonstrates the characteristics of hard work, passion for what she is doing and pursuit of excellence. Maloney helped the Wolverines to Big Ten Regular-Season Championships in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004 (Co-Big Ten Champs in 2003, Tri-Big Ten Champs in 2004), and a Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2004. She was also a member of the 2001 National Championship team. Academically, Maloney was a standout as well, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2001-04 and was a Michigan Outstanding Academic Achievement Award winner from 2000-2004.

She currently holds the record for the most shutouts in one season at the University of Michigan (9). She is fifth in career shutouts (14.5), fourth in career goals allowed (62), fourth in career wins (28) and third in career games played (52). Maloney currently sits in a three-way tie with Katie Oakes (1999) and Maureen Tasch (2001) for the single-season wins record (18).

"I'm very excited to welcome Molly to my coaching staff and the Spartan program," said MSU head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "She has been a part of Big Ten Championship teams and the 2001 National Championship team, as well as being named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team in her years at Michigan. Spartan field hockey stands for pursuing excellence in athletics and academics. Therefore, I believe it's necessary to have a staff in place that has exhibited those ideals as well. In her two seasons at Central Michigan, Molly's coaching earned the Chippewa goalkeeper a spot on the All-MAC Conference Team. I'm confident Molly will bring that same coaching ability and style to our goalkeepers and help us become the best we can be."
